My research at UCLA focused on developing techniques for radiotherapy treatment planning that explicitly consider and compensate for breathing motion. Intra-fraction motion remains one of the biggest challenges in radiation therapy. In most cases, radiation therapy treatment plans are static; they contain no intrinsic motion information aside from simplified surrogates for complex tumor motion signatures. Intra-fraction motion is typically managed during the treatment planning process by adjusting the treatment plan so that the tumor either never or rarely leaves the high dose region. By far the most impactful source of intra-fraction motion is breathing induced motion. In my work at UCLA, I took the lead on developing the next generation of 4D-CT imaging for improved management of motion during radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery, a technique that is now used clinically
